Psalm 139 Author David. Search Me, O God. Written to the choirmaster. Believed by many to be the most excellent Psalm David ever wrote. It declares the doctrine of the "omniscience" of God, meaning that God is "all knowing". He knows the beginning and end.
In the Psalm David acknowledges that God knew everything about him. God even knew his thoughts, his every move God foreknew. God also knew every word he spoke before he spoke it. Such knowledge, David says, is far beyond his ability to understand. This knowledge affects people differently. Some view this with fear, realizing the God knows every thought that they have. Some view it, like David, with amazement, finding God's sovereignty and knowledge of His created beings, mind-boggling. For all sinners, it is devastating, for all saints, it is forgiveness beyond our merit.
In the reading of this Psalm, we can only find comfort in the knowledge that we are forgiven and saved for eternity, despite our sins, even our evil thoughts.
