Psalm 140 thru 144 are very similar. They were all written by David while he was being persecuted by Saul. It was written to the choirmaster or chief musician while he was in a cave hiding from the forces of Saul and presented as a prayer. In these Psalms:
His complaint, at this time, was against the persecution of Saul who had determined that David had to be done away with and here, hiding in a cave for safety; David prays that God will deliver him from his enemies. He encourages himself by looking back at the many times that God had delivered him and prophecies the destruction of his enemies. He ends the Psalm by encouraging others that in times of persecution God will deliver them also.
In the reading of this Psalm we should learn from David the process of prayer. Prayer should be made with the assurance that God hears and will answer in due time according to His purpose for our lives. David had learned that from past experience.
