Psalm 140 thru 144 are very similar. They were all written by David while he was being persecuted by Saul. This Psalm, like all the others, were written while He was in a cave hiding from the forces of Saul. In these Palms:
Here he acknowledges that his enemy has persecuted his soul, driven him to where he has to dwell in darkness (cave) like those who were dead. This has weakened his spirit and he is ready to give up (very much unlike David). He admits that God had not dealt with him according to his sins and for this he was thankful but he still needed to be delivered out of his troubles and his persecutors needed to be dealt with.
In the reading of this Psalm we need to acknowledge, as David did, that God has not dealt with us according to our sins and be thankful for it and see the need of his continued mercies.
