Chapter 3 records the instructions given to Ruth by Naomi on how to claim Boaz as her "kinsman redeemer". Naomi notices that Boaz works late at night at the threshing floor so she instructs Ruth to wait until after he has finished working and has eaten and laid down to sleep, then she was to go to him and uncover his feet and lay down at his feet. This Ruth does.
At midnight, Boaz is awakened and finds Ruth at his feet. She identifies herself, and he tells her to remain and he will do the part of the kinsman redeemer in the morning. At daybreak he sends Ruth home with 6 measures of barley and instructions to wait there until he determines if he is the next of kin.
