Zechariah was a co-worker with Haggai. He began his prophecy sometime shortly after Haggai, in the later part of the 6th. Century. His mission continued over a longer time and he had greater visions and revelations, particularly about Christ than did Haggai. There are 29 people in the Bible named Zechariah, this one, the eleventh minor prophet, was the son of Bere-chi-ah, who was of the tribe of Levi and who had returned from captivity in Babylon. Zechariah took over where Haggai left off in the urging of the people to complete the construction of the Temple. He also called upon the people to repent and be obedient to God.
Zechariah believed in "superhuman" mediators who he believed were Angels. These Angels controlled the destiny of men and nations. The desire of the Jews for a descendant of David to come and deliver the nation led Zechariah to support the coronation of Governor Zerubbabel as the Messiah. Remember that Haggai had declared that Zerubbabel would be an ancestor of the Messiah.
The Persian Secret Police discovered this movement and Zerubbabel were forced to run for his life. Then Babylon appointed another governor of Judah, a Babylonian by the name of Bethel-sar-eser. Thus the Jews 6th. Century dream of a Messiah was destroyed, however, the repair of the Temple did go on with the blessing of Babylon.
Zechariah's visions were those of a young man and are recorded here for us in this book. There are 9 visions recorded and that's the way we will divide the contents of this book.
