Judah's Sins and Their Judgment
Chapter 1 lists the sins of Judah:
- They had idolatrous Priests who bow down to the moon and stars and
worship the pagan god Milcom.
- They have turned their back upon the Lord and do not seek Him or
inquire of Him.
- They wore heathen clothing and followed heathen customs.
- They robbed and killed to fill their homes with evil gain.
- They were a generation of greedy businessmen and loan sharks.
- They were indifferent to God.
Zephaniah lists these sins so that might be prepared and understand why they
were being judged.
He also lists their judgment:
- I will sweep away everything in your land.
- I will destroy it to the ground.
- I will destroy mankind and all the idols he worships.
- I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist.
- I will destroy everyone who worships Baal.
- I will put an end to their idolatrous Priests.
- I will destroy those who wear heathen cloths and observe heathen
customs.
- I will destroy those who rob and steal for gain.
- They will never have a chance to live in the new homes that they
built with ill-gotten gain nor will they drink wine from their new
vineyards.
- They will become as helpless as a blind man because they sinned
against God.
- Their blood will be poured out into the dust and their bodies will
lie rotting on the ground.
- Your ill-gotten silver and gold will be of no use to you; you cannot
ransom yourself with it.
- The fire of God's jealousy will devour the whole land.
- He will rid Judah of all her people.
