William Anthony "Bill" Harvelle was the husband of Ellen Harvelle and the father of Jo Harvelle. He was a Hunter, and sometimes partnered with John Winchester. During one of their hunts, John caused Bill's death. John pulled back and had nothing to do with the Harvelles after that from guilt. |

When Dean and Sam show up at Harvelle's Roadhouse in Everybody Loves a Clown, they meet Ellen and Jo. When Dean questions Jo about her mom becoming a Hunter, Jo tells him that her Dad was a Hunter, but he passed away when she was a kid.
In No Exit, Jo remembers, when she was in pigtails, her dad coming home, larger than life, sweeping her up in his arms. She remembers her mom smiling after Dad came home, and they were a family again. She inherited his small knife after he passed away, and it was never far from her person. After the job was finished, Dean thinks Jo's dad would be proud of her. Ellen, however, is furious for Jo allowing John's boys to use her as bait - because John, as Bill's partner, used him as bait. John screwed up and got Bill killed.
Sam shows up, looking for Jo in Born Under a Bad Sign. The Winchesters left on bad terms, but Sam claims he wants more from her. After realizing she's not going to play, Sam ties her up and they talk about how Bill died. Jo tells him what her mom told her: John and Bill were in California at the Devil's Gate Reservoir, setting a trap for some kind of hellspawn. John was hiding, waiting, and Bill was bait. Sam laughs, imagning John dangling Bill like meat. The thing showed up. John got too eager and jumped out too soon with Bill exposed, out in the open. It turned around and killed him. Sam contradicts her - it hurt him, but didn't kill him. Bill was all clawed up, holding his insides in his hands, gurgling and praying to see Ellen and Jo one more time. John shot Bill in the head, putting him out of his misery like a sick dog. Jo wonders how he knows, calling Sam a liar. After Dean shows up, and Jo realizes Sam was possessed, she wonders if he was lying after all. Later, when she patches Dean up over his bullet wound, she asks him if demons ever tell the truth. Dean tells her they will, if it messes with your head.
