Joanie Pike is married to Larry Pike, the developer of Oasis Plains, Oklahoma. They, along with their son Matt, have moved into the first home in the community. |

At the Open House Barbeque on March 23, 2006, Joanie mixes and mingles with the interested potential homeowners. At one point, Larry introduces her to two handsome looking boys by the names of Dean and Sam. Lynda swoops down to try to sell a house to them, so Joanie makes a comment about how noisy a neighbor Lynda is, before she moves off to talk with someone else.
The evening of the 26th, Larry is upset about someone calling about a fake gas leak. Matt and Larry get into a fight, and then Dean and Sam show up. There is a confrontation in the front yard that Joanie chooses to stay out of, staying inside, but then everyone runs in. Larry tells her to call 911, but she can’t because the phone is dead. Suddenly everyone else is rushing around, trying to protect the house from the bug swarm that came out of nowhere. Joanie is scared at what is happening, holding tightly to her son Matt. The bugs swarm over all the windows, before trying to get into the fireplace through the flue. With the breaking open of the flue, the Pikes and Dean and Sam run upstairs. Larry pulls down the attic stairs, and Joanie is the first to run up the steps, followed by Matt, then Larry and Sam, and finally Dean. Dean is trying to use a bug sprayer as a weapon, lighting the aerosol on fire. The Pikes huddle in the corner of the attic, as holes are eaten in their roof and the bug swarm invades. They all swing their arms, trying to knock the bees off, before all five huddle tightly together, trying to keep the bugs off. When the sun comes up, the bugs escape out of the roof holes.
That day the family starts packing up to move to a new house.
