The Sins of the Two Kingdoms

This long chapter is a history of the sins of God's people. Here the sins of Judah, the Southern Kingdom, and Israel, the Northern Kingdom, are considered separately and jointly. Their disobedience is compared to two whores, daughters of one woman. They committed prostitution in their youth. Their names were Aholah and Aholibah. The Southern Kingdom of Judah was like Aholibah and the Northern Kingdom of Israel was like Aholah. Israel was unfaithful with the Assyrians and Judah was even more the whore than Israel with the same people.

  1. The idolatry of the Northern Kingdom and their ruin for it. Israel never cleansed herself of the idols of Egypt, which she worshipped in her youth. In Canaan she continued her idolatry with the idols of the Assyrians. For this unfaithfulness she lost the respect of the nations.
  2. The idolatry of the Southern Kingdom and their ruin for it. When Judah saw the idolatry of Israel she became even worst in her desire to worship idols. She took not only the pagan evils of Canaan but also the defilement of the Babylonians.
  3. The joint wickedness of both kingdoms and the joint ruin of them both. Because of their unfaithfulness both would be destroyed and scattered amongst the nations.

All this was written to warn others of the sins of idolatry and confidence in the flesh and sinful treaties with wicked people, so that they might hear and fear and not sin as did Judah and Israel.
