History

In Pilot, Dean opens her trunk to reveal she carries an arsenal in her spare wheel base. Also in Pilot, Sam rams the Impala into a house to take a ghost back home. This is the first scene Sam is driving. Afterwards, Dean threatens to kill him if he screwed up Dean's car. The only known damage was to the right headlight - it was out in the next scene.

Occasionally, the brothers sleep in the Impala. The first time this is shown is when Sam is woken from his nightmare in Wendigo. Right after Sam's nightmare, Dean offers to let Sam drive for the first time in Sam's life. Sam laughs at the offer, so Dean withdraws it. But at the very end of the episode Sam declares he's driving, and Dean tosses him the keys for the first time. Also in the episode, Haley Collins comments that the Impala is a nice car, which makes Dean happy.

In Phantom Traveler, Dean has a fear of flying, which is why he drives everywhere. He's also fast - he makes the 5 hour drive with 30 minutes to spare, showing up at the airport to save Amanda Walker.

In Skin, Shapeshifter Dean is very impressed with the arsenal in the trunk. Dean gets upset at the thought the shapeshifter drove Baby.

The first time Sam is seen sitting on the car, waiting on Dean, is in Bugs. While hanging out, sometimes they just lean against the car or sit on the car.

Dean normally fills up the gas tank himself, but in Scarecrow Dean actually asks Emily to fill her up. He asks her because he wants to question her about the Scarecrow.

When Dean is told he has only a limited time before dying in Faith, he tells Sam, "Hey, you better take care of that car. Or, I swear, I'll haunt your ass."

In Route 666, a ghost truck comes after Dean and Sam. Dean jumps in the Impala to try to outrace it and draw it away from Sam, who came up with a way to destroy the ghost truck. The ghost truck hits the Impala once in the wild drive through the back snowy country roads. Dean manages to slam on brakes to turn into a road, swinging Baby around. Sam directs Dean to park on church ground, thereby destroying the ghost truck when it tries to attack Baby.

In Something Wicked, when Dean asks for a room with two queens, Michael glances out at Sam as well and says, "Yeah, I'll bet." When Dean calls him on it, Michael smiles and tells him, "Nice car!"

In Provenance, there is a line of shiny rich cars the camera pans across - a Jaguar, a Bentley with New York license plate "THEKRIP", a Mustang - and it ends on the dusty Impala.

John gets on Dean's case about the car in Dead Man's Blood, telling Dean to touch up the car before he gets rust. He wouldn't have given Dean the damn thing if he thought Dean would ruin it.

After the run in with the demon they call Yellow-Eyes in Devil's Trap, Sam is driving John and Dean on their way to the hospital when an 18 wheeler, driven by the demon, slams into the side of the Impala, totaling the car.

During In My Time of Dying, Bobby, when looking over the Impala with Sam after the crash, tells him that it's not worth a tow, to just empty the trunk and sell the rest for scrap because the frames is a pretzel and the engine is ruined. However, Sam knows Dean would kill him for that, and that Dean will still want to fix her up.

Dean is working on the Impala, fixing her up, at the beginning of Everybody Loves a Clown. At the end of the hunt, he's back at it. However, after Sam confronts Dean about not dealing with Dad's death, Dean takes it out on Baby by smashing her trunk lid repeatedly with a crowbar to the point it puts a hole in the metal.

Dean has fixed up the Impala, and they are back on the road in Bloodlust. A beautiful montague shows off Baby when she's first seen. However, Gordon Walker snakes her keys, forcing Dean to hotwire her to go find the vampire nest.

During Reichenbach, while Sam is driving Demon Dean back to the bunker, he notices how filthy the car is. Dean's comment that it's only a car brings the response from Sam on just how dark Dean has fallen, because Dean would NEVER allow Baby to be messed up the way she was.

Dark Charlie messes Baby up in There's No Place Like Home. She slices Baby's tire to keep Dean from following her at one point. Dark Charlie also hotwires Baby, to get the jump on Dean to head over to Good Charlie.

In The Prisoner, as Dean drives into Shreveport, LA, the police pull him over. They claim he has a broken blinker, right before the deputy smashes it in. When Dean protests, the second blinker is smashed. Dean is arrested, and the police did a thorough search of Baby when they brought her into the impound. The deputy describes the amount of fake IDs found in the glovebox, and the arsenal in the trunk. Later Dean confronts the sheriff, he hits him - first, for lying to Dean, and the second time Dean hit the sheriff it is for his Baby. Sam had Lojacked Baby to keep tabs on Dean. Because he did, Castiel was able to follow Dean.

In Brother's Keeper, Dean disables the Lojack to keep Sam from finding him.

Dean goes to summon Death, for Death to kill him. Thinking that he will die, Dean leaves a note and the keys to Baby for Sam. The note says, "She's all yours", meaning Dean gave Baby to Sam, having given up all hope. At the end of the episode, when the Darkness is released, the boys race for Baby to try to outrun it. However, in backing up, Baby's left rear wheel goes into a pothole. There is no purchase but mud, and no time to push Baby out of the pothole, so the boys are left to brace themselves inside the Impala when the Darkness swarms them.

In Baby, the entire episode is filmed in the Impala.

Characteristics

At the time of the 1967 Impalas were sold, a heater and radio cost extra. It brought up the price to a whopping $5,000. Baby is a 4th generation Impala, since she was made between 1965 and 1970, with a bench seat. This means it cannot recline, nor can the seat be repositionable.

Dean describes the engine as a 327 four barrel, 275 horses in In the Beginning. The price on the windshield was $2204.

Baby has an army man in the ashtray behind the driver and initial carvings done by the boys in the back packing strip on the right. There is also a weapons box in the trunk, under a false bottom, with a variety of weapons. She has a devil's trap painted on the inside trunk lid since .

Weaknesses

Unfortunately, Baby has terrible gas mileage. Sam teases Dean about this, but Dean still refuses to give her up. Baby is also subject to car crashes, like any other automobile.
