1.12 Faith

Dean and Sam pull up to what appears to be an abandoned cabin. They go into the trunk and take out a taser for each, for the rawhead they are hunting. Going down to the basement, they find a cabinet with a brother and sister inside. Sam asks "Is it still here?" The two children nod their heads, yes. Sam then heads up the stairs with the children when the rawhead grabs Sam through the stairs. He falls downstairs while the children run all the way up. Dean fires at the rawhead, but misses. Dean sends Sam out with the children, but before Sam leaves he tosses his taser to Dean. Dean searches around. The rawhead surprises Dean, pushing him back, and knocking his taser and flashlight out of his hands. They fall into water. Dean scrambles to grab the taser and shoots the rawhead before it could reach Dean. However, it is standing in water, so the electricity traveled through the water and ended up accidentally electrocuting Dean as well. Sam comes back down, and finds Dean unresponsive.

At the hospital Sam gives the receptionist a fake insurance card for Dean. Sam covers with the two police officers by telling them a believable story, minus the monster. He then excuses himself, and walks up to Dean's doctor. The doctor explains that the electricity gave Dean a massive heart attack, and that his heart is damaged; that there is no treatment, it's fatal. Dean will die in a few weeks. Sam, upset, goes to see Dean, who's watching daytime TV. Dean is trying to crack jokes, knowing he's going to die, but Sam can not accept it.

Three days later Sam has been trying to call all of their dad's contacts, and doing a ton of research. He calls and leaves a message on their dad's cell phone, when there's a knock at the door. Dean has signed himself out of the hospital. He refuses to die in a hospital where the nurses aren't hot. Sam announces that one of dad's contacts, Joshua, has found a specialist in Nebraska who will be able to help. Sam will not let Dean die, they are going.

Sam and Dean pull up to a tent where sick and injured people are making their way to a tent. Dean is not impressed when the specialist turns out to be Reverend Roy LeGrange, a faith healer with a church. As they walk towards the tent where LeGrange preaches, they pass a man protesting that he is a fraud. Dean does not have faith, seeing what evil does to good people. Layla Rourke has faith, and so does her mother. They walk in to take their seats, and Sam insists they sit up front, to Dean's disgruntlement. On stage is Roy LeGrange, a blind man, and his wife Sue Ann LeGrange. He starts preaching against the world, how God is watching. How God rewards the good, and helps him choose who to heal, by looking into their hearts. Dean murmurs to Sam that it's in the wallets, and Roy hears it. He then calls up Dean to the front where he was to be healed. Dean at first is a little reluctant, but Sam tells him to get up there. Once up there Dean explains that he isn't a believer but Roy has no doubt that he will be.

Roy tells everyone to pray and then he puts his hand on Dean. Dean then falls to the ground, and Sam rushes to him. As Dean comes to, he sees the figure of a cadaverous man standing behind Roy.

Dean is being checked out by a doctor who says that there aren't any signs of his heart failing. He is cured, but he feels a strong sense of disquiet. She also mentions it's strange, because a man his age was brought in yesterday who died of a heart attack. Dean suggests Sam check it out, while he goes to visit the reverend.

Dean is talking to Roy and his wife, Sue Ann about how he feels great after the healing. Sue-Ann says that it's a "miracle." Dean asks when the miracles start, so Roy explains to Dean his history. Roy woke up one morning blind, and the doctors figured he had cancer. He and Sue Ann kept praying, even after he went into a coma, and he was healed. However, he remained blind, but after that he discovered he could heal people. Dean then questions why Roy chose him. Roy answers by saying that he saw Dean as a man with a job and purpose that wasn't finished.

Sam talks to Jason, who was present when Marshall Hall had the heart attack. Apparently, he ran as if he was being chased by something invisible before he died. As he is leaving Sam notices a busted clock on the wall that stopped at 4:17, the same time Marshall Hall died and Dean was healed.

As he leaves, Dean meets Layla Rourke and Mrs. Rourke. They are regular attenders at the services, and Mrs. Rourke is bitter that Dean was healed rather than Layla. Layla has a brain tumor, and she has six months to live. Dean walks into their motel room where Sam already had been researching, and Sam apologizes to Dean. Sam had checked and determined that every time LeGrange has healed someone, another person has died of the exact same symptoms. Dean feels responsible for the person that died for him, while Sam was just trying to save Dean's life. Dean puts together that Roy isn't killing the people, but a Reaper is. As they speak, LeGrange is healing another person, and a jogger in the woods is attacked by the same old man and dies of the same symptoms when it touches her. Dean recalls the Reaper can only be seen when they come after someone, and Sam remembers the cross at the healing service, a clock he recognizes from the Death card of the Tarot. Dean wants to kill LeGrange because he feels that Roy is responsible for the deaths, but Sam proposes they break the spell controlling the Reaper.

Dean and Sam pull back up at the tent. David Wright is outside the tent trying to expose Roy as a fraud. The boys agree with him before Sam heads over to the house to look for the spell book while Dean tries to stall LeGrange before his next healing. Roy leaves his house to go to the tent with help. Sam breaks into the LeGrange house to try and find the spell book to control the reaper. Sam finds an ancient book with newspaper clippings, and surmises that Roy is killing people he sees as immoral, and that the man who was protesting in the parking lot will be next. Sam calls Dean to inform him what he found; Sam will find David, but Dean has to stop Roy from healing anyone. LeGrange calls up Layla. Dean tries to stop her without success. In the parking lot Sam frantically searches for David, before he hears David cry out. Finding him, David tries to point out the Reaper to Sam. Sam tries to get him away from the Reaper that he can't see. Dean calls out "Fire!" before Le Grange can finish the healing. Dean calls Sam to tell him that he stopped Roy, but the protestor collapses, so it can't be Roy. Dean looks around and sees Sue Ann still doing the spell. He spins her around, interrupting her, and finding that she is praying over the Coptic cross they had identified earlier. When she stops praying, she quickly hides the cross in her blouse and calls for help. The reaper disappears. Two police deputies come to take Dean out. Sue Ann says that she wouldn't press charges and that "The Lord" would deal with Dean. The deputies promise to put the fear of God in Dean if he shows up again, before they shove him. Layla confronts him. Dean tries to explain to Layla but can't. Layla walks away, disappointed, and as Dean walks back to the Impala he overhears LeGrange promising Layla's mother that Layla will get a private session that night.

Back at the motel, it becomes clear Le Grange doesn't know what his wife is up to. Sam reads up on the cross that Sue Ann uses to control the Reaper, and identifies how to bind the Reaper with a dark altar. Dean surmises she used it to keep the Reaper away from her husband. Sam realizes that she is now using the Reaper to take out immoral people. They need to destroy the altar and the Coptic cross, and soon, because Roy's healing Layla tonight.

They arrive back at the tent. Dean wonders if they should wait until Layla is healed. Sam points out they can't play God, to let someone else die to save her. They exit the Impala and approach the tent to watch, but they don't see Sue Ann. Heading over to the house, Dean draws the police off and Sam tries to find Sue Ann. Sam searches around the house but is unable to see Sue Ann inside. He notices a light coming from an underground cellar right outside the house. He goes underneath and finds the altar, complete with a marked picture of Dean. Sue Ann confronts him, stating that she gave his brother life and she can take it away. Sam overturns, and destroys, the altar, but Sue Ann locks him in the cellar, saying the Lord chose her to reward the just and punish the wicked. That Dean is one of the wicked and deserves to die so that Layla deserves to live. She claims it's God's will, then leaves. Sam smashes a window to escape.

Sue Ann returns to the service, to summon the reaper, so Layla can be healed. Le Grange begins his healing of Layla, while near Dean the lights go out and the Reaper appears before him. Sue Ann prays over her Coptic cross while the Reaper grabs Dean, and starts to take his life. Just in time, Sam luckily finds Sue Ann to smash her cross, with the appropriate blood, along with her powers. The reaper is released, letting go of Dean who falls backwards, and takes Sue Ann's life. Layla, however, is not healed. Sam leaves Sue Ann laying there, heading back to Dean and the Impala. Dean and Sam get into the car and leave.

Dean questions if they did the right thing. Sam believes they did. Layla comes to visit Dean for a goodbye, courtesy of Sam. Layla explains that she didn't get healed, but that she has faith even when miracles don't happen. She starts to leave, but before she does Dean said that he would pray for her, and she says that is a miracle.
